How I Learned to Drive

Text by: Paula Vogel
Directed by: Borna Barzin

Cast: Caitlin Charles, Michael B. Anderson, Tamar Rubin, Ryan Cortelyou, Augusta Fitzgerald

“How I Learned to Drive” by Paula Vogel follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, starting from the age of 11 until her college years. This memory play, told out of chronological order, uses a driving lesson as a metaphor to discuss pedophilia, incest, alcoholism, and misogyny. The play explores the ideas of control and adolescence as well as the idea of forgiveness being what breaks cycles of trauma. A rowdy Greek Chorus aids Li’l Bit as she steps in and out of her childhood story with a man she deeply loves and resents. This cast and crew performed this piece first in New York City, New York in 2017, produced by Stand Up. “How I Learned to Drive” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1998. The play premiered on March 16, 1997, Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre.

Performance in English, with translation into Romanian.
Performance not recommended to audiences under 12.
